Kudos to the City of Edmonton. This Sunday they are opening up some of their more popular venues to the public, free of the usual admission charge. I expect parking to be a zoo in itself so we may also get to try out the transit system! Hey, when in Paris...
On my list of places to visit is the Muttart Conservatory...see you there!
Joe's week in review
Joe was away Wednesday - Friday last week for a huge treaty signing in Turtleford Sk. Here he is with some of team.
David Young (HR) and Joe taking advantage of a camera pointing their way! Love the gloves Joe...very 'food handlerish!'A quick unpack and pack of his overnight bag and Joe was off again Saturday morning. This time he & his friend Steve headed south to Aaron's for the UFC night with the boys. Thanks to Joey & Alex for giving up their beds!
When to stop driving
CBC is running this story today and I think everyone should pop over and read it.
My sisters & I were faced with this issue years ago with Dad. At that time, we had him in for testing for AZ because he was doing funny things. Dad who could always balance a cheque book to the penny, now was having some accounts go into collection. It was painful but his driving was petrifying.
Our worse fears were that he would hurt or kill someone while out in the car. He forgot how to properly turn off the car many times and had to call for road side assistance. He returned with mystery marks down the length of the rear quarter panel. Power steering fluid was put into the brakes causing them to eventually seize up. The list went on and on.
But to Dad, having his own transportation available at whatever time of day or night was his ticket away from the quietness of the house and his soul.
To say that we had to campaign hard and long to Dad's doctors to pull his license was an understatement. None of the doctors wanted to be responsible for taking away his driving privileges. Soon it was time to re-new his license and we thought he would never pass the eye test, let alone seem competent. Well yes, he had trouble seeing the eye chart, but the lovely elder woman giving the test was more than helpful in supplying the right answer! He got his renewal.
Eventually, the Department of Motor Vehicles did pull him in for a re-test of the driving laws and Dad failed. The license was handed back and Dad's driving days were over. We got lucky...no one got hurt. It could have been so much worse.
Have the talk with your aging parents & grandparents. Have a plan before lives are affected.

Use it or lose it!
Everyone has heard that expression which can be applied to virtually anything. Well it seems I've lost my arithmetic skills! I was taught to use a slide rule long before calculators hit the mass market. Some accountant type people had adding machines but those were few and far between. Students never had access. We had a pencil and eraser!
There was a time when I could add long columns of numbers with out a problem. Figure out the new selling price of something with x% off. Well now I can't seem to add 2+2 and get the right number.
I came across this and I will be practicing. How are your skills?

Great weekend, lousy week!

Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close up!

Oops, my commercial is on...shhhh!

Come on in, the water is fine!

All ready to help with that next home reno project - pass me a hammer!
We all enjoyed the weekend. Heather & I got some more wedding planning done, Jonathan now owns a little cardigan a la Mr Rogers! The big boys saw the event's wagon in action and the weather was fabulous. So why did I wake up Monday morning with this awful head cold, racing fever and dry hacking cough???? Why???? Must have been a punishment for having so much fun!
Priceless
1. Phone calls from the shire! Gotta love it!
2. The look on Joe's face last night! We were playing Scrabble...Heather started the game with quad over the centre star. Jeff countered with rag off the a. Joe took one look at the q, u, r & g...and it was pricelss! DUH!!!!! However, he did redeem himself and added heat across the bottom...changing rag into rage! By my turn I had lots of maneuvers!

What is that smell?
We were burning money this morning...in the form of a furnace running in not even mid September! We had a heavy frost last night which left the house at a nipply 14'C.
I slept great underneath my Hudson' Bay blanket. However it soon dawned on me that Jonathan doesn't have such a blanket and he probably wiggles all over the place and out from under his covers. So reluctantly I nudged the thermostat on until we had confirmation that yes it still works!
Jonathan...I only do this for you, your cousins and your Great Nannie! Everyone else can put a sweater on! See you soon little buddy.

Testing 1 - 2 -3
Lesley's post got me thinking...I so enjoyed playing around with html and all that jazz...finding happy mistakes and actually learning some geek speak. Blogger Beta or whatever it is called is OK, but I like to tweak my blog. The widget were handy but got oh so boring very quickly. The highlight of my day was changing the order in which stuff appeared! How lame is that for crying out loud?
So as I adjust the look to me look, bear with me. If you find a glaring error, please let me know via a nice friendly comment. That way I know that someone is actually checking up on me!
Take care all!

Catching Up!

This is the last of the garden flowers. We expect a heavy frost tonight to finish them off. Overall I'm pleased with this year's efforts. Some things I will change...am in the process of dividing some overgrown perennials...Aaron will be getting some lilies for the front garden beds...not sure when. Joe & his friend Steve have a bike trip planned for the next UFC night. Saddle bags are only so big and he does need to take a change of clothes. The grapes are still on the vine - we know we are pushing the limits here - but DD1 is visiting this weekend and she will want positive proof that yes we grew our very own grapes. This need of proof positive all stems from the summer Joe retired from the military and went and tied on some store bought vine ripen tomatoes on our plants just before DD2 visited early in the summer! Someone had way too much time on his hands. That's about the time I send him back out into the world to find a job or somewhere else to go!
Over the weekend we pulled the camper home, got it cleaned out and winterized. It's back in its winter storage area. Sunday we pulled everything out of the new shed and reinforced the floor underneath the doorway. We slightly miscalculated the first time around. Then Joe built a narrow but useful shelf to span the back width. On this we have the small things like lawn chairs, kids disassembled climber and the baby stroller. Underneath we have the lawn mower, my bike and the tuned up snowblower.
Next on the to do list is prune back some shrubs and rip up the old decking that was under the A frame shed. We will close the hot tub after the Thanksgiving weekend. Our first snowfall in 2006 happened the third week of October...and stayed. I'm getting too old & slow to run through the snow to unlatch and jump into the tub!
So I hope this little updates satisfies those who have been wondering why the bloglines have been so slow of late. I don't necessarily mean you Aaron! How you doin????? Tee Hee
Too close for me comfort
I passed this accident shortly after it happened. I'm so surprised both drivers survived...someone divine was looking after them. My hands were shaking as I continued into the city to run my errands.
As I drove south, I could see a car weaving back and forth, changing lanes in order to pass yet another car. Soon it was passing me, very aggressive, even though I was doing a bit better than the posted speed limit. I glanced over...it was a woman! I guess road aggression isn't a man thing!
On my return trip, I was in my usual lane, approaching an intersection controlled by traffic lights. The light turned yellow - the car in the right lane 1 spot ahead of me slowed down to stop. The big truck that was just coming up from my blind spot on the right, hit the gas. Yup...the truck hit the car hard, sending it scurrying into the intersection which hadn't filled with cross traffic yet. the car continued past the intersection, dropping parts along the way and pulled over to the shoulder...driver got out...a senior, visibly shaken. Truck driver also got out where he was...fluids spewing onto the highway...and guess who was right behind me and seen the whole thing?
It was the Highway Peace Officers! I hope the truck driver has learned his lesson...don't assume because you want to run the light that the vehicle in front of you will do the same thing. Some of us do obey the traffic laws!
My last thought on this-

POSTED SPEED SIGNS ARE NOT A SUGGESTION!
Lovely weekend
The weekend was lovely. We all golfed Saturday and then Sunday the big men played 18 while we had a casual morning. Sunday dinner was roast turkey and all the trimmings! Yum! The Scrabble game got quite a work out...but I think we should get a new Scrabble dictionary...there are so many new words that are in everyday conversation but I'm unsure if they are acceptable. Psst...I hate drawing the Q at the very end!!!!!!!
Monday, the travelers hit the road before the highway got too crazy. We picked up more for the wedding, then watched the Stamps do that all over the Eskimos!
Tuesday it's back into routine...I'll be calling the grandkids after supper tonight to find out how the first day of school went. I'm so excited for them. They are growing up so fast!
