Up, Down & all Around!

This is a shot of the lil greenhouse, sitting in front of the window - hence the bad lighting...but the plants have priority! The top shelf has the tomatoes & green peppers, already potted up. the nest shelf has my flower annuals - marigolds,(3 types) lavatara Mount Blanc - a beautiful white with a blush of pink just before they open. These also grow tall ~ 4' if they get lots of sun. I also have a tray of alyssum - snow carpet, Jacob's Ladder. The blue container is a trial - peat pots on a capillary mat - I have a new to me annual which I forgot how to spell but it will have blood red furry flowers, some summer savory and some sunflowers. Maybe the grandkids will want to adopt one each. The next shelf has 11 pots of dahlias - 6 creamy white and 5 light yellow. I also have 2 pots of 1 white & 1 yellow begonia...these will go on my front porch if they do well. On the bottom is a trial...some of the tubers on the dahlias broke off, so I planted them to see if I can get some freebies! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

This is the best developed tomato so far, but the others aren't far behind. I restrained myself and only planted 12 seeds of the Manitoba variety. Lucky me 9 are still hanging in there. Both girls will have their hands full this summer with family reunions, new baby, garage building, holidays etc. So as the Soup Nazi said...'No tomatoes for you!'

These are my gotta have's - CrackerJack Marigolds. They grow about 3' tall and have blooms all summer/fall long until the frost takes them.

The main outdoors greenhouse has seen some growth. I have some sprouts just starting to poke their heads through the soil. The bad news is we are expecting a deep freeze early next week with temps to -17'C - I may lose them but I did move everything away from the south facing wall and into the center where they should have the best chance for survival.

We definitely missed the mark with the gravel for the floor...the lawns is so saturated and moving wheelbarrows of that stuff will tear up what lawn I do still have. So I will go without until things dry up.

On the VOLE not mole problem...it trails are much smaller - indicating voles aka filed mice...Joe and I toured the neighbourhood and everyone with a lot on that green space behind has some amount of damage. We are probably not the worse off so that is the good news. But again, we have to wait for all the snow to melt to reveal the true extent of the damage and go from there.

PS - I was so pleased with my Asiatic lilies last year and I now have to face the realization that the voles may have had them for dessert...apparently they eat anything green except daffodils and I don't have any of those! I will next spring!

There goes that attempt!

Not spending money for a week is a tough one! We ended up having the truck serviced and then Joe's helmet arrived...and didn't everyone want to be paid! LOL!

Oh well...

We are off to Ft Sask. tonight to watch the Traders hopefully shut down Okotoks Oilers in the AJHL semi finals. We thoroughly enjoy watching Shannon Szabados in net...she's going on to the women's national team...watch for her in the Olympics!

Tomorrow, road trip to Calgary. Kate's bridal shower is Sunday and I have a very important quilt to deliver. It'll be nice to see Jonathan again...sounds like he's changing so fast! And perhaps we can squeeze in a visit to the park with Joseph & Alex...if I can keep up to them!

Have a great weekend all!

101 in 1001 progress

#1. Joe's truck is in the shop for warranty work and has commandeered my VW - so unless I walk, I'm at home. I'm accomplishing a lot around the house despite my gardening woes. Today marks day 3 of not spending any money...that'll change as soon as we pick up the truck...Joe had them change the oil while it was in.

#14 -Eat vegetarian 2x/wk for a month is on schedule...2 weeks done, 2 to go.

I#24 - started reading my Bible again...what a slow read...fine print...no pictures! Maybe I should switch to the girls'!

#40 - pinwheel quilt should be delivered this weekend! WOOT WOOT as Les would say!

#69 - listen to different CD daily is going well, I listen while I'm downstairs, working on the computer or sewing. Today's selection was the soundtrack from Working Girl which I got from Les when she purged a bunch...now I know why that was in the heap

#15 - water with meals is going well, mostly because I have a nasty dry cough and sipping water eases it - so goes extra humidity in the house.

#35 & 36 - 10km walk...Joe sent me the info on the JD 5 km walk, but it's on Dad's birthday so I'm torn....what to do? It would be a great cause and great practise for a bigger one.

#92 - join St Albert library...I have the forms ready to submit, but I would have to spend money, so am toughing it out until that goal is completed or wrecked.

So that is where I am in the big picture...not all that inspiring but progress none the less.

Thank goodness for things on order!

Joe found the helmet he wants but not in the colour he'd prefer so it's now on order. The good news is we can now use the gift certificate from the bike salesman to finish paying for it when it comes in. I had forgotten it when we went out.

So with bikes popping up all over the place, you can just see the urge in Joe's eyes...gotta ride, wanna ride, when can I ride?!

So he'll have to be satisfied with wiping it down this weekend and charging up the battery, installing the license plate, maybe even getting some gas for it!

Will post pics when the big initial ride happens!

Have a great weekend.

Ellen, Bob & Joe!

We were channel surfing last night and ended up on Ellen's show and she had Bob Woodruff as a guest. I had followed his story about being injured in Iraq and his recovery. However I was not prepared for the shot of his x-rays in which the whole left part of his skull was removed to allow space for his swelling brain. What a powerful image...coincidental, we had been discussing helmet shopping this weekend. We'll be checking them all out for the best quality and fit first, looks will be second. Joe, I think I'll keep him around for a long time to come!

Test the Nation?

Just wondering if Joe & I are the only ones who took this test last night via CBC?

Great Sunday

We had an awesome day...the morning included lots of paint with water with Joseph & Alex...now to find a suitable place to display their works of art. Joe made a nice ham dinner...and then Beck family left for home. Strange how the house seems so quiet after they leave...so we decided to leave too! We went off in search of the access road to the stairs off Fox Drive in Edmonton. And Joe found them!

Walk the stairs off Fox Drive
FYI - There are 242 steps up quite a steep grade. The temperatures were around - minus 12 with a brisk breeze at the top. The return trip took us about 25 minutes, but I had to stop, have a few coughs and catch my breath and admire the scenery. We will be doing these again to monitor our progress.

1 down, 100 to go!

Weekend update

Our water returned around noon...one of the developers broke the water main, so they will be footing the repair bill.

The kids - Joseph & Alex enjoyed playing in snow...they got totally soaked Saturday chasing me around and pelting me with snowballs. Joseph is left handed and can he throw! Didn't miss too many times! Alex took pity on me and tried to help by passing me some snow balls he made. Too little too late...I lost!

Aaron & Joe went to the Zoo with Steve...for the famous meat draw...I now have a couple nice steaks in the freezer! Thanks guys! Lesley & I went into town and picked up a few odds'n'ends for Kathryn's upcoming bridal shower...that is all done, except of the food prep on the day of the event.

All in all, another successful weekend of too much food, lots of games, a movie or 2 or 3...play doh time and of course, some paint with water. I now have 7 pictures to add to my collection!

It's TGIF! And no water!!!!!

OMG...the kids are coming...Joseph & Alex!!!! I know it's going to be a whirlwind weekend of fun, so I better get ready! Have a great weekend everyone and watch out for the green beer Saturday!

Just before 8 am, Joe who took a day off work, tried to turn on the tap...and no water...nothing in the whole house...I checked outside to see if there was a crew doing some work I didn't know about...nothing...Joe called Town Hall...they asked if we had a swimming pool in our front yard...nope...the whole town is without water and they don't know yet where the break is...Joe took a dash to the grocery store for extra jugs of water, hand sanitizer and some baby wipes...he also bailed the little bit of water in our sump pump hole...so we can bucket flush later this afternoon...hope no one has di*rrhe*! Stay tuned for weekend water woes!

I'm challenging everyone to do this!

101 things in 1001 days

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Some common goal setting tips:
1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.

2. Stay Focussed. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.

3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.

4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.

5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.

Huge thanks to Candice

What with everything going on in our household, I totally forgot to mention what a beautiful album Candice made for us. There are pages of colourful photos of her Japanese family, friends and the scenery...this was truly a worthwhile trip. Much different than Joe's trip with the ships...which was more...what's the word...fluid...than Candice's!

Thanks again for thinking of us!

Easter is coming!

Some people associate this holiday with other things...but I can never think of one without the 'let's wax Daddy's stomach' brainstorm! So, in order to keep the costs down - so we can spend more on chocolate - I found a DIY body sugaring site! Are you game for part deux Joe? What...no volunteers? I don't believe it!

Great night!

We caught the Tom Cochrane and Red Rider concert last night. This was my first time, Joe seen him with the girls early 1991/92? in Kingston. I must admit besides great music he was very personable with the audience. We had seats on the dress circle, slightly above the stage ...no one in front and no one behind!

On a different topic...seems like there are an awful lot of birthdays in the next 10 days or so! I hope I don't overlook anyone, if so...Happy early Birthday!

Difficult days ahead

I thought I was all together...Freecycled Chow's travel tote and dishes to a nice lady and her new 3 yr old dog Roxie...who is smaller than Chow was!

I get home, the mail box is fixed, I have mail, including a sympathy card from the vet and staff.

Later our neighbour tells me her dog Kizmit has just been confirmed to have an aggressive form of cancer on her hind leg...flashback to Lady...Joanne is just devastated and I have to be quiet about our loss. Surgery is set for Tuesday, I will try and be a good friend and stay positive. Things happen for a reason...I'll be keeping Cody close by today.

On a brighter topic...our weather certainly feels like spring. I was scooping as fast as I could and scraped that last corner of the deck clear. We still have snow 4 feet deep all over the yard, but maybe I'll get the picnic table moved over before Joseph & Alex visit next week. It would be nice to sit and blow bubbles! I was in the greenhouse, didn't take the temperature but the ground is not frozen, in fact it's quite warm! I may be hauling in some gravel this weekend!

Here's Jonathan

I can not believe how quickly Jonathan is changing and growing up! He was playing with Grandma yesterday. She stopped in for a visit on her way home to SK after a month in sunny Mexico. Looks like Jonathan has taken on a sunny glow too!

What a stir a photo can cause!

To say that Joe was surprised by all the attention would be an understatement.

Part of the deal of him getting the Bouvelard was that he also get more active. Too many times, he would come home from work, and sit exhausted after supper, just waiting for an appropriate time to go to bed. Granted he had long days in the office with lots of corcodiles nipping at his heels. The 2 x 1 hour commutes didn't help and add to that the fact he left in the dark and came home in the dark.

But with the days getting longer, the crazy 100 days soon coming to an end, Joe has a lot more energy. 4 out of 5 days he does his walkie/jog. The scales haven't shown a huge difference, but his stress level is down, he's breathing better and almost never snores. Unless he's been hanging out with Aaron or Jeff and had a few!

I'm looking forward to the switch to early daylight savings time this Sunday...a sure sign that I'll be in the greenhouse soon! Now to shovel out the door so I can open it!

Possible new career?

Joe has been out of the cooking field since he retired in 2000. But you just can't take the cooking out of Joe!

A couple of weeks ago, Joe headed up to Fort MacMurray to be the primary judge in the Aramark Travers Division cook off.
The winner goes on to a national level competition and that winner becomes the Canadian Aramark representative for the big compeition in the US.

Shawn Genge won and is on his way to Montreal. Joe may be doing a little translating on the menu so Shawn can present it in both official languages.

Joe looks good in his jacket, kind of scholarly....maybe he should teach!

BTW - don't miss Iron Chef Wednesday March 7...Canadian chef Lynn Crawford, formerly of the Four Seasons is taking on Iron Chef Bobby Flay! I wonder what the secret ingredient will be...something as yummy as maple syrup?

Still off balance

Sunday was a day for private grieving, Monday, we rocked Heather & Lesley's world. Cody still doesn't understand why I brought the travel tote back - empty. This morning, Joe didn't sugar his Cheerios and forgot to take his travel mug of coffee for the hour commute to work. Yesterday I didn't want any sound in the house, today I turned on the radio as I check email...but I still have a place cleared on my desk...

Thanks for the cyber hugs...much appreciated.

Sad day

Ciao aka Chow

Feb 20, 1996 - March 4, 2007

Everywhere I look, I see signs you were there, every room of the house, every nook & cranny. I miss your little head butts in the morning for that first pat, your meow for breakfast, your paw helping me check email, your gaze as I did my housework, the way you would drop in front of me for a belly rub and the way you would jump onto my lap when it was tea time.

Chow would 'do' breakfast with Joe. She wanted hers too! Another trait was that she would wait in the shadows until he got up from his favorite chair and then she would jump up and make herself at home. When Joe sat on the couch, you knew the princess had 'her' chair.

Chow was officially Heather's pet, but we adopted her when she had to move where no pets were allowed. Never the less, Chow would brush up against Heather when she visited and the purrs would be noticeable louder when she was stroked under the chin and called 'baby girl'. We were blessed with Chow's presence in our last 3 homes in the past 11 years. She never liked moving but wasted no time making herself 'to home'!

We 'entertained' Lesley's cat Romy for a few months while Romy tried to get over the loss of her sibling catmate Shelby. Romy is a skinny, high strung unsociable cat who had gotten into grooming herself too much and was soon becoming a hairless cat. Chow & Romy never did become friends but for the most part, tolerated each other. There was the odd scrap when one would be in the kitty box and the other wanted in. When Romy returned home, she had begun to grow back quite a bit of her fur, but that was just a temporary condition. I think she was too busy staying alert for a possible Chow attack that she didn't dare put her head down!

Chow and Cody had a great relationship, not exactly typical dog/cat behavior. Lots of time, where you found one, the other wasn't too far behind. Some days Cody would try and start a little ruckus...see if she could get Chow's motor going. If so, the 2 of them would tear through the house, up & down all those stairs, flipping carpets over and having a grand old time. Other days, when it was nice outside, we would throw the ball for Cody - she'd only have the ball in her gaze and when it would happen...Chow would pounce out from under a bush and take off after the dog. Game on...Cody would try and steal Chow's food and Chow would pay her back by not letting Cody pass on the stairs. Despite the size difference, they were like sisters.

Chow had a wonderful friend in our dear neighbour Joanne...who cared for Chow whenever we were away, including our holiday last year. Joanne quite looked forward to a weekend of Chow, she would come over, feed her, scoop her box all the while listening to Chow complain or brag...if Chow you never knew...and then the two of them would sit down and watch Coronation Street! What a secret life Chow had. Actually, what a wonderful life!

Good bye my little friend!
