They're Here!

Just a quick post to let everyone know the travelers arrived safe & sound...but very tired. The 3 hour time change is not fun!

Both were a bit hungry but it this age of not enough workers and too many empty jobs...do you think we could find a burger joint open @ 12:30am? Nope...it was leftover Italian Wedding soup and a croissant for these 2! Now...what to do for lunch? lol

I'll let them sleep as long as they need to....I may go back to bed myself...I can't function well on 5 hours sleep...and I'll make sure they call sometime today!

Note to Lesley - YES...you have already made me wear panties on the outside...I'm just waiting for my bra to be there also!

Happy Hallowe'en all!

Any Dr. Mehmet Oz fans?

His latest book YOU: Staying Young will be released tomorrow. He's greatly concerned with the rising incidence of Alzheimer's Disease and some of the numbers are alarming. He talked more about this issue on Blog Talk Radio with host Connie Bennett's show. This is my first time listening to Connie...not the sharpest pencil if you get my drift...but I did enjoy Dr Oz.

The kids have often kidded with us, that if we ever get AZ, they would take good care of us...at a cost...like dressing us funny....panties on the outside, that sort of thing. Think about it, talk about it and if it ever comes to be, it won't be as hard to talk about!

Cross off # 3 on 101 in 1001 days!

LaZBoy had a great sale - 45% off and no GST so we took the plunge and got matching chairs! It's not the Louise - doesn't swivel...but it does rock & recline! Now the problem...I want mine closer to the window so I can enjoy the view and good natural light. But, we have house guests arriving and they may want something to sit on besides a milk crate! So the sofa & love seat are still in the living room. The old chair is wrapped up and sitting on the deck until we can go to the dump. Now to source out a small scale sofa...the smallest one LaZBoy has is 2" longer than what we have now! We may go and check out IKEA and see what they have. We'll drag Amanda & Rob along...they may enjoy drooling over all the great ideas.

I just realized that I've slacked off on my 101 in 1001 quest...only have 22 things crossed off! I better pick something and GET IT DONE! Did you like that reference to GTD????

After much delay, kicking it, I finally set up my 43 folder tickler file and ...it's working great! Things I expect in a couple weeks are popped into the appropriate folder. I did my bill paying etc...and THEN the mail arrived with another bill...so I just put that into today's folder, ready to go. I just hope I can keep it up until it's a habit. Stay tuned!

Hope all the young ones have a great time trick or treating tomorrow! Amanda & Rob can help us give out treats!

Have a good one!

Joe was feeling better!

He had a chance to catch up on some sleep this morning and felt good enough to go grocery shopping with me. We got that done and decided to spring for lunch out. hadn't done that in a long time.

It was one of those...lunch ready in 15 minutes or it's free deals. It wasn't and it was! Joe was so excited that without thinking he peeled open the first mint, popped it into his mouth and then peeled open the second and last mint and popped that one in his mouth along with the first one!

By the second A-hem! from me he realized what he had done! Bad boy! Especially seeing as I had the money for lunch in the first place! He tried to give me a wet soggy mint but I said No...I'll get mine later and Yes, it was going to cost him!

It did! We went into LaZ Boy and after kicking chairs for almost 3 years...I got mine! And then I said I wanted a second one! Pay up Joe!!!!!Yup, my 'mint' sure tasted good - I hope his did as well!!!!!

Poor Joe

He had a huge day at the office after being on the road for 4 days. Then he had a 2 hour wait for his flu shot...they were just doing #6 when we arrived and he was #35...only 2 nurses working. We were sitting in a drafty lobby, his back started to ache. I thought it was from the drive, and lack of exercise. Later last night the pain may have revealed itself...possible kidney stone movement! Poor guy! I hope things settle down with some bed rest.

I'm optimistic but this is a bit much!

We had snow mid October 2006 and it STAYED for for 7 long months. FACT

Yesterday was October 25...2 months before Christmas...and a certain someone finally got around to putting his motorcycle in the shed. Mind you, he still thinks he'll get another ride in this year...he won't add the gasoline stabilizer UNTIL he's positive he's done with this riding season.

To him, his glass is always full! Non the less...we had a skiff of the white stuff last night and in combination with this morning's freezing rain....I think it's time to put the helmet away dear!

Ups & downs of day to day life

Kizmit underwent a second cancer surgery yesterday. I haven't spoken with Jo since she got home with her 4 legged friend. I do know that Caiden is missing her sister terribly. It was so quiet over the fence...but I eventually got Caiden to come over for a pat. Hopefully Kizmit was recovered enough from the last bout of treatment to bounce back again. And there better not be any repeat of the stitches all breaking open!

On the brighter side of things, I am back in contact with my dear friend Kora. Between all the military postings we lost track of each other. I've always wondered "Whatever happened to...". Some times with some effort but mostly good luck I can reconnect. We had a good chat, caught up on 20 years of family events...seems that we have both been challenged along the way and have come out on the winning side.

FRIENDSHIP IS A JOURNEY OF TIME, LOVE & MEMORIES

Let's talk trash

I must have a dull life if all I can think of blogging about is...wait for it...
GARBAGE CANS!
I know some folks...no names...have gone through a multitude of designs searching for the perfect solution. This, my dear family and friends is what I want/need! I can dedicate 1 bin for 'compostables', one for regular trash and 1 for papers I need to shred. Too easy. And these can be found at H*me *utfitters. I hope someone takes the bait...Christmas is coming!

I stumbled across it yesterday while shopping for Joe's needs at work. Seems the ones they have now aren't meeting their needs. Because the cans are visible to the working public, they needed something stylish yet functional. And what is more stylish than stainless steel.

After much thought, trying them all and drawing a bit of a crowd, Joe decided on a couple of these beauties. The top flips open much like double doors on a frig...taking up little space...simply step on the floor pedal and dump in what you need to.

Ahhh....a girl can dream, can't she?

Sauce your Pasta the Italian way

Chef Mario Batali spells this out clearly...no pool of sauce with your pasta...dress your pasta like a salad! Now...I really want a great meal of pasta! Anyone care to join me?

I turned around and there you were!

We headed into the cities yesterday morning...pick up my new prescription sunglasses - very chic! - amongst over things. The Br*ck had a sale on LaZ Boy chairs...but nothing that fit both of us...I think I'm going to end up spending the big $ for the one I really love - Louise! I'm still searching for 1mm wide Velcro for someone's new playroom...seems there was a Hallowe'en costume rush on just that!

Anyways, I digress...I thought W*lly world might have some...nope but I ran into Isabelle & Pearl from the QUIL group ...they are discussing which fabric to purchase to cover the teen bulletin board @ the library. Bright blue wall and I said the lime would certainly pop...so they are going with the green. Isabelle mentioned they were going to meet for an impromptu crafting session later...was I available. I said probably.

We left, went into the big city and as we are looking for parking, who do we see again - Yup!!!! You must understand that outside of the library I may never see these women in our small town. What are the odds of running into them over and over in a city the size of Edmonton?

Oh well...I got my shopping done, did some crafting...cinnamon stick Santas...and we enjoyed UFC @ Jo's...yummy eats...meatballs, cheeses, pickles, crackers and Uncle Paul's Jambalaya. What a hit!

Ruby...don't take your hoe to town!!!!

I've had a Kenny Rogers song running circles in my mind since Joe said this last night as I left for my garden club meeting. Last night was swap night...anything gardening you weren't using or extra seeds or plant cuttings. I had a duplicate garden fork and the Dutch hoe that I hadn't used since I had the big garden in the Kingston ON field with my dear friend Lorraine. My dear friend Jo didn't have one, but she does now! I swapped the hoe for 3 garden magazines and an envelope of black eye susans! Win Win!

The blue roses are continuing to put smile on my face although they are starting to droop. Image my delight when a certain someone came home from work with these 2 beauties! My first birds of paradise (or is it bird of paradises?) and I love 'em...I wonder what zone they grow in..9? A person can dream, can't they?

Fred is still close at hand for stitching time. With the new to me readers, I can't believe the difference. It's so much easier to see the holes even with out strong sunlight. I won't be afraid of dark backgrounds in the future! It is obvious to me that this won't be completed in 2007, but I'm not going to rush and perhaps make a mistake I'll regret. My SAL with Bliss & Margaret has given me a strong jump off point and this will get finished.

I did sidetrack and stitch up this beauty...a freebie called Linen Heart. I got it through an online stitching group...and will share if you email me a quick note. I used a scrap of 16 count white Aida and some odds'n'ends of floss.

Have a great weekend all...I'll be watching UFC along with most of you!

We often come back to this

It only takes a few minutes into our next camping trip, for one of us to comment on how efficient our camper is...so why are we in the sized house we are in? Do we really NEED all that room? It's more to pay for, upkeep, furnish, and heat.

Take a look at this beauty...do you think we could downsize that much????

Do this for yourself & your loved ones!

Thanks Pumpkin for the reminder...with my eye appointment yesterday I missed this!

Eye check up couldn't have gone better although it wasn't comfortable. The dilation drops sting and you can't squeeze them out, you just have to get through the discomfort aka pain. No sings of glaucoma, for which I am at high risk. My bilateral ptergia continues to hold steady. My prescription has changed slightly for the second year in a row and it now warrants new lens...and since I wear glasses all day long, I'm shopping for new frames...maybe 2 if I can manage it...one classic and perhaps a fun pair. I can't wait to go shopping this weekend.

My Doctor did suggest I buy some 3.00 readers for my cross stitch - it'll give me a larger viewing area vs my progressives. Gee...I'm interested in whether this will increase my stitching speed or at least my accuracy!

Hope the autumn weather continues to hold out for you. The weather forecasters here have revised their forecast and got rid of that dreaded S word. Thank you!

This says it all!

2008 garden hopefuls!

Little Business
Stella D'Oro
Strawberry Candy
Pandora's Box
Fluffy Astilbe Mix

We planted these up over the weekend for a brilliant splash of colour in the newly designed flower beds. Today I'll be back in the dirt planting 107 spring bulbs that I picked up at a bargain price...some tulips, daffodils, and irises. I'm sure I'll forget where I planted them so I will be planting a marker - just in case!

Who knew?

We all knew that labour is expensive, whether it's car repairs, home renovations, legal fees...whatever. Those rates could never have prepared me for the going rate for a top notch organizer professional! Check THIS out for this past Monday! Ouch!

Happy Anniversary!

Love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Today marks our 32nd anniversary...hair styles have come and gone, hems have gone up, down and up again. Our daughters have grown and made their way in the world. We've been blessed with 3 beautiful grandsons. We've lived in NB, NS, ON, AB, BC, and PEI, in 13 different homes. We've moved closer to family and away from them. We've grown as adults and a couple. We've laughed and played as well as cried and mourned. Joe is my husband and most importantly, my best friend. I see more adventures for us in our future! This is one ride I don't want to miss! Happy Anniversary Joe!

Shoe Laces

The next time I get frustrated with something I really have no control over...I'm going to check out THIS site and try each and every different method! That should clear the cobwebs!

What a slacker I am!

A whole week without a post! How shameful! NOT!

We had a marvelous Thanksgiving weekend...the highlight being Brenda's visit yesterday. Joe hadn't seen her since we left BC many moons ago, but they didn't let that get in the way! We all chatted away about anything and everything, generally solving nothing but feeling better for having voiced our opinions! I don't know where the years went but I know how much I enjoyed the hours we had with Brenda...she's one of those special people you meet and immediately click. I think we will have to heed her advice about getting off our duffs and go down next fall for a wine tour!
By the way...if you challenge her to Scrabble and she claims she's rusty...beware! I won the first game, then Joe won and one the third challenge, Brenda opened with 'quick'...of course the q was on a double letter and the whole word was then doubled. Joe tried but couldn't recover, and I just managed to keep my head above water! But was it fun!

I had a good talk with Brenda about caring for people with Alzheimers...she gave me such a warm feeling about the care my father is receiving. Brenda has her own special people through her work. There are those who go the extra step to make the residents retain their dignity and yet gently guide them along. She is going great work!

Our trip to see Dad was good, although the Calgary-Med Hat was was iffy at best. The conference went well, ironed out a few problems, and clarified other aspects. Dad will stay where he is...it's the best thing for him, even though I do miss his company terribly. It is so hard to visit during the winter months - between the road conditions, our schedule and the ever present thought 'Am I carrying a flu bug that could put the residents in jeopardy?' All relevant.

Dad was having a good day when we arrived, his face lit up in a huge smile was we came through the day and he even managed to get Joe's name out! I am going to get Dad a subscription to the local daily newspaper...not sure how much he takes in but it's an important part of his day and has been for many years.

On a side note...I have a couple rows of romaine lettuce peeking out of the greenhouse bed! I don't have to rush and get the bacon & croutons ready but when the time is right, we will be having a beautiful caesar salad!

Enlarged Flower Bed

This end was doubled in depth...the fiddleheads and the hostas had outgrown their locations. If the weather holds, I'll transplant them into the larger area.
This corner will be home of my astilbe collection. I love their feathery appearance and I should be able to view then from many vantage points.
This will be planted up with some reblooming lillies. I realize that we'll have to imbed a couple of stepping stones so the grandkids can just dart out onto the lawn as they have in the past. So far, our dog has walked around...but there's a towel hand just in case.

We have plans to sand & refinish the hot tub and order a new top. We'll keep the old one for winter use. We are still unsure what to do with new sunny deck...I have to check with the town bylaws office in regards to arbour/pergola height restrictions. Joe wants to grow more grapes!!!!

So, leave a comment, I always appreciate another point of view!

October 1

What else should I do on such a fine day...while awaiting still more information to trickle in for my audit? Play in the greenhouse!

After a year, I decided that I wanted an inground bed in the greenhouse. Joe supplied the labour over the weekend and today I planted romaine lettuce, beets and swiss chard. There's nothing like pushing the growing season....will let you know if anything grows.
Over the inground bed, Joe built a rack system. I have a second wire rack rack stored under the top one. The idea is we'll figure out the spacing some I can adjust the racks as I need them. Obviously flats of seedlings need much less room than plants. The top cross piece will have hooks installed so I can hang my baskets and or dry herbs or sunflower heads. The rack is set back closer to the glazing but still within arms reach.
The other side of the greenhouse has my rack with potting soil and my clay pots. In the corner you can see the water barrel which is half full for the winter. I have yet to decide on the darker side of the greenhouse, layout and use...again I think I need to use it as is and make notes about what works and what doesn't. Right now 2/3 of the floor is still unfinished, I dropped the outdoor carpet down just for the winter, but eventually it will be a gravel bed of sorts...clean but with great drainage. The shelves may make way for a potting bench.
Close up of the top rack is service. I have a pot of lavender and lupins...both will be guinea pigs of sorts. Again a case of pushing the growing season. Besides, there is nothing more soothing than brushing your hand through the lavender and breathing deeply!

Exciting News Ladies + 1 more off the 101 list

First...I'm checking off the Muttart Conservatory from my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will be returning...hopefully at a time when its not elbow to elbow with camera toting people!

Second...I had the local news on while doing my breakfast dishes...the business report was on, I was only half paying attention when I heard those magic words...Body & Bath Works...seems there is a leak that this much loved American company may be setting up in the WEM. Stay tuned for further developments as I hear them!
