Joe's Friday night out with the boys

I got back home just in time to run out for head cold supplies for Kevin and to drop Brian off at the MMA fights. I seen Joe sometime Saturday morning. Not sure who these fighters are but I'm sure the Big Guy will comment.

This is not one of the fighters...but one of Joe's arm candy! We'll be talking about this!

Miss me?

I had a sudden road trip. A few weeks ago, when Lesley mentioned Alex's Beaver group was looking for help making scarves, I said I could help if they give me the supplies and some time to do it in. Well Tuesday night as we were finishing supper before the ballet, we got the call...she just got all the fabric dumped on her and her machine wasn't cooperating. So I went down this thing in the monring and sewed in the basement. In the end I only completed 18 scarves...we ran out of binding after the 1oth one and then we went looking around the city for more. Guess what...everyone was making scarves and we only found binding for 8 more. Oh well...I brought home about 20 cut scarves and I'll finish them as soon as I can.

Popped in to see Heather at work...not much else time...everyone is so busy. Jonathan wants his Nannie to visit in November so now I'm trying to figure out my schedule, their schedule and oh yes...Kevin's schedule. Joe and Brian are getting busier by the phone call and I still need someone at the house for him. Throw in another night at the ballet ans we have a huge conflict to untangle.

The Beck boys are growing up fast. Joe had quite an experience but I'll let Lesley post about that. Alex was concerned when I was sewing that I would run over my fingers. So I made sure I had enough time to sit with him and let him sew a bit just to get the feel. I drove, he steered. Did a good job!

I didn't make MMA last night. A friend was in town and only had Friday night to get together with Joe and chat business/pleasure so I gave up my ticket. Hung out with Kevin who is struggling through a wicked head cold. I wonder where he got that from? Oops!

Wild Cucumber

The temperature is dropping faster than I would like it...because I'm no where near ready for tonight's frost warning. I do believe that it will happen this time around and all my lovely annuals will be mush in the morning.
This is what the fruit of a wild cucumber vine looks like. The spikes are quite prickly and are the size of a small egg. My vines didn't do anything but my friend Jo, hers went absolutely crazy. She stopped counting the pods at 200 and she so generously donated most of them to our garden club. I scooped up 6 pods in hopes of growing at least one next season. Jo planted hers in the fall and I tried freezing my seeds in the house with a spring planting. I'll be direct seeding as soon as I find a good spot.
After several days of drying, the flower end of the pod pops open - I never did catch one doing that - and inside it almost looks like a mini loofah sponge. Each pods has about 4 seeds which look a lot like a watermelon but with a tone on tone swirl. Ah the joys of gardening!

OT - Brian had a adventure he will probably not want to repeat, especially as the colder whiter weather sets in. He got in the 'rhubarb' as Joe likes to call it. Couldn't get himself out, only limited phone access and had to walk ~ 4 kms to camp. Once he arrived, covered in mud and dog tired, it was too dark to go back and pull out the truck. Luckily someone gave him a change of clothes so he could wash his while he grabbed a hot meal. Today is another day!

Kevin found yesterday's rain and wind quite cold. Not sure how he will do in January when we have the Alaska clipper come in and stay for a few weeks of bone chilling temperatures.

Tonight is out first ballet...Peter Pan by the Winnipeg Ballet Company. Should be a good event of awe and wonder. Then to 'undo' the girliness of the ballet, we are heading out for MMA. This is the CDN equivalent of UFC, a few of their fighters are on the card but no names I recognize because, well, it's just not my thing! Sorry Joe! But I will attend and see what all the hype is about. Who knows, maybe I'll get my photo taken with Herb Dean!!!!

Still here

but my run of misfortunes continues Saturday. Joe and both boys were away for the day, working. I was catching up on prepping the garden for it's big sleep. I was bent over transplanting some newly divided coneflowers when I got stung...in the posterior region! Hurt like h*ll, ran in, scraped off what was left of the stinger, cleaned the site and took an allergy pill and waited. Soon the hives started up my arms and I sat quietly and waited some more. "Sat" isn't a good description of leaning sideways on the softest chair I could find. Oh well...I survived but the site is still quite itchy.

Autumn came in hard...lots of howling winds, driving rain and yes, most of my pretty yellow leaves are now up the street against a neighbour's fence. The tree is almost bare. Sigh. Summer is gone...

I hope I've had my 3 bad luck items

It all started yesterday...my head cold was raging, I was coughing or dry hacking most of the day. I felt good enough in the morning to go out for the fajita fixings for supper. When I felt not bad, I got the steak cut into strips and in a marinade. I got the veggies cut. I then started making the guacamole. The avocado wasn't as ripe as I would have liked but I pressed on. Got it mashed up, added a touch of horseradish and a squeeze of a half lemon. It still needed some zip so I got out a new bottle of hot sauce. Took the wrapper off, popped up the lid and proceeded to shake in a couple of squirts.

Well the whole lid came off...I had ~ 1/2 inch of red sauce floating on top of everything else. So I tried to pour off what hadn't immediately soaked in. Because of my head cold..I couldn't taste well, but it seemed OK. Found out this morning that it was a tad bit hot!

So this morning, I start some laundry. Didn't quite have enough liquid HE detergent so I reached up to open the new jug. As soon a I got a half twist off and whole lid came off and there was blue glugs of slippery soap going down my arm, all over the front of the washer, onto the floor! I recapped it as soon as I could but the damage was done. It took 3 loads of double rinses to get the suds out of the machine and clothes. I still have a t-shirt covered in soap...I'll just add that to the next load and call it even. The floor still seems a bit slick. It was so ugly all I could do was laugh and email Joe with news of my adventure.

Then this afternoon I was relaxing in the sunshine working on my seasonal chair cross stitch. I found a bit of tape and didn't think anything of it...stuck it on whatever was around which later ended up in the trash. Not big deal. We had a leisurely supper and I wanted to put in a few more stitches. Then it hit me...that bit of tape was from one of my floss bobbins with the floss number on it!!!!! Now I have one mystery color that I'll have to drag into Michaels and try and ID before my dreaded frogs re-appear. I'll wait until I read Saturday's newspaper in case there a 40% or 50% coupon...may as well make the trip really worth while. I did try to match it online with my monitor. I figured if the colour of a known floss matches the one online, all I had to do was match the unknown...but it wasn't quite a 100% match...more like 75% and I'm not taking any more chances. Road trip to Michaels is in order.

Good night all!

Gotta love the new Gadget

Blogger has added a blog list that will track the latest postings of your freinds & family. The timing is perfect for me as I'm having issues with bloglines.

Joe & I had a dinner date last night, sans nephews! They fended for themselves...well not really, they just had to cook their noodles for my homemade spaghetti sauce I made in the morning.

I had a lunchtime surprise. Kevin brought home a couple of the guys he hangs out with in school...I got introduced as Auntie B...I kinda like that! They didn't stay long...just long enough to say Hi and grab a nanimo bar on the way out! Kids!

Today I'm in the garden, dividing some perennials and potting up a few smaller pieces for tomorrow's garden club meeting. I can spend far too much time outside...I'm even so bad lately that I ignore the timer I bring out!

Tonight Joe has his first music lesson...we'll all be excited to see/hear how that turns out. BUT NO DRUMS!!!!! Sorry Jeff...but they are just too big and too loud. Will post tomorrow on how things went.

Fabulous weather

These past few days have been most excellent and I'm spent far too much time outside, ignoring my inside tasks. Oh well...catch me if you can.
My day hit a small blip when someone on the radio so nicely reminded all us listeners that we are JUST 100 DAYS from CHRISTMAS! Did I need that reminder...I don't think so...I know the holidays are coming because I always get my LL Bean catalogue about this time! Time to look, drool and calculate! Maybe this year I'll actually order something.
Tomorrow is a special day for dear Brenda & Garry...their 20th anniversary. I hope you have a terrific day and an even better evening!
Take care all!

Boys will play

Seems like the boys are a good fit with our lifestyle and routines. While I was away, Kevin discovered that my helmet fit his head...so did my seat on Joe's bike! I guess I have competition.

Saturday afternoon was just gorgeous out. I wanted to play around in the garden so the fellas got a tee off time and headed out. I was surprised that the links weren't crowded...wonder if they were all playing in their gardens?
We ate far too much food yesterday...eggs and toast with apple juice before heading to the farmer's market. Then we accompanied Joe into work - something came up at the last minute. Then Joe treated us to crepes with hot apples and cinnamon topped with whipped cream. I so need to do all my walks this coming week after that meal...er...dessert! Supper was homemade french fries cooked outside and while we were chomping down on those, we had some tasty burgers cooking on the BBQ. Strange...no one had the munchies later on.

Great road trip!

Wednesday I headed south for a night of card making and then helped Les with a schedule conflict Thursday. Both Thing 1 & Thing 2 are in school and it seems like they are growing up overnight. Where is the time going? Seems they are just in a stroller, babbling away.

The next day I swung south again to visit with Heather & Jeff. I was totally unprepared for the continuous giggles from Jonathan. He was a bit upset when the back door opened and it was me with Cody and not his Mommy but shortly afterward and smiles and giggles started. He goes nonstop...does anything and everything. His somersault is perfect and his dancing ...well you tell me! We had the CDN version of So You Think You Can Dance on and I didn't see much of the TV show...JR stole all our attention.

Sometimes the 4 hour trip is a little TOO far!

So not in the mood!

Mr. Harper, there's a 101 things I'd rather be doing than going to the polls on October 14.

What are your thoughts?

Lost the football game

Except for the final score, I thoroughly enjoyed last night's outing. We met up, headed down and got one of the last parking spots at the Legion...1 block from Commonwealth Stadium and grabbed supper at the local donair sub shop. Yes...I CHEATED and ate out...a small toasted veggie sub. The weather was threatening but we managed to stay dry. While I was watching the pre game warm up ---that was my treat...cute buns of steel!---the fellas took my camera and went to check out the sights. I can't spoil the fun for the others but this is Joe's visual souvenir!

Short but productive week

It began with Kevin not in school and by Wednesday afternoon...we were in the office getting him course loaded. Thanks to Lorna for her diligence . Classes have changed since the dark ages of the 70's...I wonder if I could return just for the fun of it???

We've eaten at home every night until today. Off to the football game...supper out but we did all have a nutritious home made lunch...does that count?

Still walking despite the darkness. Not sure what is up with Miss Caidin...she's almost got us jogging beside her. We've trimmed 7 minutes off our time this week! Not wonder my legs feel so tight!

The boys are slowly finding their bedroom floors...more work to do this weekend if anyone is home. Just heard that our 4 way stop corner is being rezoned...for what...a convenience store! Great
NOT!

Crafting has been non-existent this week...so many calls to make and wait for. I did get the lawn mowed and a few weeds pulled and some red tomatoes picked. Watching UFC Saturday with our friends...the Chuck Liddell fight should be good but seems all the talk is around the next UFC night (Nov. 15) when Brock Lesnar takes on Randy Couture. I guess you could say I'm getting into it...I have a ticket for the MMA later this month. But I will sell it for face value!!!

Hope everyone at the corn boil enjoys themselves...sniff sniff...at least post some photos after the fact so we KNOW what we missed! lol

Challenges of every type

Lesley has issued a challenge she got through Jenn to eat at home for a month. Well here's proof of my supper last night. Not sure how healthy it was...2 BBQ burgers, onion, tomato and some yummy cole slaw with a glass of OJ.

Our other challenge is with the provincial education folks. Seems Friday of last week a new policy came down which affects our guest houses eligibility to attend school. While searching their website to read the wording in case we have a slim chance of getting into school I came across their "Keeping Kids in School" newletters. Ironic or what! We have someone in the school who is trying to find some answers for us. In the meantime I've drafted my letter to the Minister of Education, our MLA and all of this will be forwarded to our local city newspaper for their consideration.

Still walking in the morning, but it's getting darker and with the heavy dew, the path is getting quite slippery and muddy. Sigh...no denying that the next season is well on its way.
