Just for fun today

We headed out this morning looking for a new to us adventure and ended up at the lanes in St Albert. Just so happened the YBC league had finished and there was lots of room for us!

Shoes off, rentals on...little snafu with J's pair - 2 lefts no rights!...but we were soon directed to lane 12, complete with gutter bumpers.

Partway through the first game, J started to get a sore arm...he was trying to bowl the proper way, one hand, draw back and release. He was doing a great job at the start but soon spotted the ramp aids and that was that. He quickly figured out how to angle the shoot to bank off the gutter bumpers!

More on garbage

Monica just posted a comment on Moral Dilema and said something so true, about getting around the bag limit by using larger trash bags. Here, besides the bag limit, there is also a limit on the weight of each bag. I've never had a problem with an overweight bag - I figure if I can carry it to the curb, it's got to be okay. The city of Edmonton is digging in their heels over any bag limit despite the fact that all the smaller communities in the surrounding areas have limits. I wonder if it will be a different tune when the city has to look for another site for trash storage!

Phone Tag Day

I was reviewing Dad's last statements from his residence to find some extra deduction with no explanation, so....get my pad of paper for notes, a pen, phone numbers and start dialing.

I started by calling the Medicine Hat number, but was told I had to call head office in Edmonton. Fine. Did that...they can only help a little bit. I need to call back to Medicine hat for the specifics.

Seems they should have been charging for the laundry services all these years but weren't. Ok, I'm fine with that but now I await a return call from someone who will have to draft up a document of some sort for my files explaining this change in policy. I left message but am now wondering if she may be on days off with school kids on their spring break!

The second issue is the trust account. Seems there is a notation 'money from trust' $12.22. No explanation other than they took the money out. I can see that! Where did the money go? Why wasn't there the usual note saying 'hair cut', 'outing to Dairy Queen', 'bus trip to the mall' etc? Things can only get better as I wait on hold...seems the person who did this recreational outing has since left their employment...now I wait for a call back from their supervisor! The only good(?) news is that many people had the very same $12.22 taken out of their accounts.

So here I sit waiting for the phone to ring while I desperately want to run my errands so I can go out into the greenhouse this afternoon and play in the dirt!

Ring, d*mn you, ring!

Thanks !

Who ordered more snow?

I realize that I'm probably sounding like a spoiled brat, we have had a great winter, compared to our eastern neighbours. But everything is relative and we had ~ 4 gorgeous days, I cleaned off my chair on the front porch and actually had a couple afternoons of leisurely reading with my faithful companion Cody. Late Friday afternoon, the thermometer bottomed out and the snow that melted as replaced with a fresh supply.

Nevertheless, we had something on the calendar for this weekend and by gosh, we went and did it! We finally found and agreed on a new patio set for the back deck that was in OUR BUDGET! How great is that? We have it on order and hopefully the deck will be clear before it arrives for pick up. I no longer have to plan on a couple days on picnic table sanding, painting and generally refurbishing it. Hmmmm....a possible Freecycle item? Perhaps I'll use those beefy boards in the greenhouse. They are nicely weathered.

As food prices seem to sky rocket, we continue to enjoy our little secret green grocer! We picked up 4 bags of fresh veggies/fruit for $17.16! An English cucumber...and I love a cucumber sandwich with fresh cracked pepper... 0.69, a pound of baby zukes, just right for the BBQ basket .49/lb, small red onions .69, green peppers .79/lb. We got that, bok choy, lemons, apples, mushrooms, bean sprouts, garlic, ginger, asparagus...we are going to be eating fresh and fabulous all week long! vegetarian meals are easier and more cost effective than ever before, unless you grow the stuff yourself. That's coming!

We rented a new to us Wii game...a hunting one...guess who picked that one...now we have a problem...no one to show us how it works! Oh well, TV seems to have bottomed out and we are looking at cutting back severely, so we do have time to play around with it. Maye we should have picked Cooking Mama!!!!

We'll be watching the Brier Final tonight. AB's Kevin Martin takes on ON Glenn Howard.

I hope babysitting goes smoothly for Lucie, Leeanne and Al this afternoon...Jonathan is a busy boy! I look forward to a post on the adventures in babysitting!!!! Hint - stay out of the city!

Moral Dilema Part 2

I feel so much better now. Last month I signed us up for an ebill vs a paper one through Canada Post. Well today we received a $10 gift card as a thank you. It saves the company paper & postage, I get my bill faster - from any location with online access.

The really great news?

The gift card is for HOLE'S Greenhouse!!!!!

Win win!

Is my calendar right?

Addendum - As Lesley pointed out, my great niece Caitlynn and my great nephew Zach both celebrated birthdays earlier this month! Hope they were happy days...any photos to share?

There are 8 birthdays between this weekend and the end of the month? Wow! I hope everyone has a great day with their loved ones and friends. Don't eat too much cake!

Best Wishes to

Moral Dilema

Everyone who REALLY knows me, knows 2 things...I always try to do what is right, play by the book and I'm frugal...that comes from being a Johnston through & through. My parents taught me well, especially Dad. The things he could do with a roll of yellow blasting wire. I think Joe still has the shortest piece left from cleaning out Dad's garage before we sold the house.

So I have 2 very distinct directions pulling at me.
  1. My effort in doing what I can to reduce, recycle and re-use. I Freecycle, I donate gently used clothes and household items to charities, I home compost,I try and remember my canvas totes and say No to that extra plastic bag for a 4 l jug of milk. I drive to the Recycle Depot - no curbside pick up here - with my tins, glass jars, milk jugs, newspaper, mixed paper and cardboard and in summer, grass clippings..
  2. Our lovely little town which is blossoming at a alarming rate - but we love our home, the area and our great neighbours - and the town has upped our garbage pick up fees. It is just short of $15 per month and we have a limit of 4 garbage bags. Twice a year - fall & spring they up the limit to 1 pick up of 12 bags so you can do some serious tossing.
I have reduced our curbside garbage to ...get this... ~ 5 bags per month! So that works out to $3 per bag for me as opposed to the folks down the straight who religiously put out the maximum each and every week! So their garbage is worth $0.94 each bag.

Is that fair? Is that an example of one man's trash is another's treasures! Boy the treasures I must have!!!!!!

Please comment, I know the folks on the coast have stringent guidelines about this...not sure I want to save all my table scraps for 2 weeks in the summer before they will get picked up...I heard about Monica's run with some maggots!!!!! YUCKY!

Totally 80's wrap-up!

The official tally was posted on Team Crockett's site and we are very pleased with the results. We were however disappointed with the turn out but those who did join us, had a fabulous time.
Tables were decked out in our blue and yellow theme with balloon centerpieces with 80's trivia 'vases'.

DH trying to out do KISS's Gene Simmons...Chris went on to win the prize for the Best Celebrity Look-a-like! Well done Chris!
Baby Houseman along with Miami Vice's Sonny Crockett and Madonna pose for the camera!
Wayne (Mike Myer), GnR's Slash, The Demon and Gayle in her best 80's outfit ham it up early in the evening. It only got better!

I ended up dressing preppy ala Ally Sheedy of the Breakfast Club. Despite having lots of volunteer help with tear down, there was still a lot of unlady like positions I got myself into before we officially handed the hall back to the community. The Dynasty outfit would have been a disaster. My calves are still tight from carrying all those cases of pop up and then down those stairs!

BTW - the Bow Tie Quilt brought in $70 and I have had a request for another one. I have a scrappy Bargello with Friendship Stars to make for my grandsons first. However if I can get that and this second one done, I will donate that money also to the cause.

Team Crockett treated ourselves to a night out at a popular dinner theater Saturday where it was a treat tow waited on. the on stage was fabulous and the off stage one with our serves was priceless. The highlight...when a wee one thing (looking like a typical 10 yr old girl in the mid 1960's) talked up to Big Steve, said something and after looking at his dinner plate with a few veggies still on it...smacked him in the forehead a la 'Should have had a V8!' Timing was incredible! We all burst out laughing and we didn't stop until the show was over!

The planning has started for next year's fund raiser...I guess this means it'll be an annual event! What a great cause. For those checking the UNCOVER THE CURE it appears that we are short of our goal. However, there are a few cheques going in via snail mail and they will take longer to process.

Bringing you up to date

The Totally 80's party was a huge success...lots of laughs and friends out to support a great cause. The entire team has matched their financial commitment, anything else is just more gravy! Lesley's goal appears to be short, only because she had to snail mail in a cheque for 2 of the donations. Lesley did a fantastic job pulling all the stoppers out! Rumour has it, she has next year's party almost all planned out! can't wait.

In the end I went with a preppy look which was good for me...I forgot about all those stairs up to the kitchen. We didn't' get as many people as we had planned for so some of the many cases of pop had to be carried back down to one of the trucks. Tight calves STILL...4 days later!

Mid February, Aaron went to the MFC match in Edmonton - without a camera...they won't be making that mistake again in May! Anyways, Herb Dean the referee who oversees most of the big UFC matches was kind enough to have one of his staff take Joe's picture and post it on his website for us to snatch! What a guy - a true gentleman who kept his word!

What was I thinking?

Panty hose & heels at a party in which I'm helping with the buffet lunch, bartending, selling tickets? and whatever else is needed!!!! A quick check of my closet and I think I can put together something 80ish for tomorrow night!

I'm not sleeping soundly again! My mind is starting to take over my body...crazy dreams, some of which I can remember in vivid detail (I take after my Dad in this department - he had wonderful recollections the next day!) other times, I just have a foggy sense about what ran through my mind.

This morning I awake shortly after 3...hot flash...not a flush, a flash! Joe was snoring, I couldn't get back to sleep, especially after I discovered his heavy housecoat carefully tucked around me so I wasn't cold!!!!! My mind was full of things to come, the party, my next sewing project, my continued craft purge planned for next week and my progress on Frederick.

By 4:10am, I gave up and got myself out of bed. Have a cup of green tea, I loaded and started the dishes from last night...I was lazy and just piled them!!!! Then I checked email, read a bit and then watched a bit of tv while waiting for Joe to get his day started.

Joe thinks I should blog about my commando day yesterday, but what can I say...I pulled on some clothes to run the trash out to the curb and I just never thought about underwear for the rest of the day! I doubt... KNOW I could never go outside into public life w/o! I'd give myself away with my red cheeks of embarrassment. After all, all our Moms told us to WEAR clean underwear in case we are ever in an accident!

The first JR video

This is the first mini movie of Jonathan during his last visit...I finally found the file on my computer...please don't mind the dizzy ending...I've only had the camera for 2 Christmases!

Jonathan's video debut

Jonathan wanted to climb in the old radio box that my Dad fixed up to be Heather's first toy box...only fitting that Jonathan play in it!

Starting to chicken out!

This Friday is the big Totally 80's Team Crockett fund raiser for the upcoming Undercover the Cure: The Underwear Affair...and I'm second, third guessing my choice of costume!

I want to be comfortable, not wrestle with pantyhose and heels! And I haven't the foggiest notion how to get BIG HAIR when it's only ~ 2'' long!

Why couldn't I have said I'll come as I am...stuck in the 70's?!!!!!!
